Nature

Although Stone had “always painted landscapes, just for fun,” he turned wholeheartedly to exploring new ways to remake the traditional genre; almost as a reaction against years of working within the confines of a studio, and in a rigorous mode of constructivist abstraction, Stone now allowed his art to become freer, more spontaneous, and open to the surrounding world. The resulting landscapes feature an abstractionist’s keen sense of form and a convert’s enthusiasm for complete immersion in naturalistic effect.

One of the artist’s many pleasures is the ability to watch the unfurling of a vision of a loved subject observed over time. “I embraced my opportunity to add my interpretation of the contemporary landscape to the tradition of the Pennsylvania Impressionists who had painted the same views. I eventually started to draw knee-deep, midstream in the river. I painted the joyous moments when light dappled a loved landscape.”

Today, the interaction of man’s global activity with the Bucks County landscape is far too clear, bringing witness to the destruction that recent storm cycles have brought to our region. The aftermath of recent disasters calls us all to rededicate ourselves to renewed attention to the environment and stewardship to the places we cherish.
